Feel the Flow grew out of a lifelong inquiry into learning, transformation, and what it truly means to become whole.

When it was finally time for me to earn my doctorate, I was already a tenured professor—but without a PhD pr EdD. I went to the University of Georgia knowing I needed the degree, but not yet knowing what I wanted to study. A wise advisor encouraged me to follow my deepest interest, and that interest had always been at the intersection of learning and personal growth—the self-help side of development.

That guidance led to the title of my dissertation: Development and Learning for Transformation. With that question in mind, I began spending long hours in the stacks of the university library, reading everything I could find on transformation—from Ken Wilber to Ram Dass, and many voices in between.

One afternoon, deep in the older sections of the stacks, I came across a book that would change everything: The Farther Reaches of Human Nature by Abraham Maslow. It was published after his death by his wife, and in it Maslow clarified something that is still often misunderstood.

Self-actualization was never meant to be the end of human development.

In the familiar Pyramid of Needs, self-actualization appears at the top. It has been widely interpreted as the endpoint—I’ve arrived, I’ve made it. But Maslow himself said this was never meant to be the summit. In The Farther Reaches of Human Nature, he explains that the true horizon is self-transcendence—what he described as becoming a good person in a good society.

That distinction stayed with me through the completion of my dissertation and into every chapter of my life that followed. The question became simple and enduring:
How do we become a good person in a good society?

The answer, I’ve found, begins inward. We tend to our own awareness, our own healing, our own ways of being. And as that inner work takes root, it naturally expresses itself outward—through how we relate, how we choose, and how we contribute.

Transformation is not something we achieve—it is something we live.

When this shift toward self-transcendence takes root, two things begin to show themselves naturally: the inner qualities we live from, and the outer expressions that arise from them. The following reflections explore both.

Natural Expressions of Living in the Light
Inner Light Qualities

About this Drawing and How it Flow Began

Woman standing still atop a mountain, wind flowing through her sleeves, skirt, and hair—symbolizing mindfulness, energy alignment, and the power of flow in life’s journey.

It all began with a picture — a quiet image of a woman standing on a hilltop, carried through the decades as a symbol of inner stillness and spacious awareness. First discovered at a high school art show over 50 years ago, this painting has remained a personal touchstone, quietly guiding a lifelong journey of healing, learning, and teaching.

The phrase Feel the Flow emerged again and again — as a title for and publisher rejected for two nationally and internationally published books, as a theme for countless workshops, and now, as the heart of this website. When the copyright for the most recent book returned in early 2025, the next step became clear: to create a home where the wisdom gathered over a lifetime could continue to flow forward.

Though FeelTheFlow.com was taken, FeelTheFlow.info was available — a perfect invitation to share insights, practices, and tools in a spirit of generosity and connection. Here, you’ll find reflections drawn from teaching, writing, healing, and everyday experience — all offered to support your own unfolding. As this site evolves, it will grow more interactive, weaving together timeless teachings and new technologies to help us all rediscover a deeper rhythm of ease, alignment, and inner flow.
